The month of May has been a beautiful period of joyous celebration and gratitude for STAR Catholic as we’ve spent time giving thanks for the incredible gift of Catholic education.
Early in the month, May 6-10 was Catholic Education Week. We embodied this year’s theme of “rejoice and be glad” by celebrating our amazing schools through the sharing of facts, good news and successes.
One of the areas we chose to highlight was the social justice initiatives undertaken by STAR Catholic staff and students. During everything from food drives and bake sales, to collecting blankets for the homeless and raising funds for a school in Kenya, students and staff work hard to share the gift of God’s compassion in order to make the world a better place.
We are infinitely grateful for our amazing schools and the incredible work they do both within their own communities and beyond. You can read about some of their many achievements on our website at www.starcatholic.ab.ca/schools/socialjustice.
At the end of the month, on Thursday, May 30, we will also celebrate World Catholic Education Day. We encourage members of our school, parish, and other local communities to wear blue to mark the occasion and share their photos with us using #BlueforCatholicEd.
The colour of the sky and seas — some of God’s most magnificent creations — blue symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, faith, truth, and heaven. The colour is also associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary.
By joining together to “go blue,” we not only show our support for the gift of publicly funded Catholic education, we also create a visible tie bonding us together as a community. This represents the mutual respect, friendship, and love we have for one another, for which we are eternally thankful.
We have much to be grateful for and celebrate — not only during the month of May, but all year long. In the hustle, bustle, and noise of our modern world, it can be easy to lose sight of the many gifts we have been blessed with.
I encourage you to take a moment every day to reflect on and give thanks for your blessings. Whatever you are thankful for, and whatever you are celebrating during those quiet moments, I hope you are filled with a deep and meaningful feeling of peace.
